In August 2017, USAID awarded FishWise a five-year agreement—later extended to six years—to found and lead SALT. Together, hundreds of entities shared ideas and collaborated, and the result was an invigoration of the global movement toward the inclusive design of electronic seafood traceability. SALT is transitioning from a USAID-funded program to be fully led by FishWise in early 2024. Follow FishWise to continue receiving updates from us!

Supporting solutions for seafood traceability by building a global community who collaborates and shares knowledge.
About us
The Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability (SALT) is a global community sharing knowledge and acting to promote legal and sustainable fisheries through improved transparency in seafood supply chains. SALT brings together the seafood industry, governments, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to accelerate learning and support collaboration on innovative solutions for legal and sustainable seafood. It focuses particularly on traceability–the ability to track the movement of seafood through supply chains. At the end of its five-year project, SALT envisions an interconnected seafood community that uses comprehensive electronic catch documentation and traceability (eCDT) systems to share valuable information to help prevent mislabeled and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) products from entering the market, strengthen effective fisheries management, and support legal and equitable human welfare conditions for seafood laborers. SALT is a public-private partnership between USAID and the Walton Family, Packard and Moore Foundations and is implemented by FishWise, a non-profit sustainable seafood consultancy. To learn more about SALT visit our website or contact us at salt@fishwise.org.

The Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability partnered with Ocean Strategies, Inc. and Totem to explore the intersection of #DEIA and social responsibility in companies' policies and practices. Diving into philosophical and practical overlaps between DEIA and social responsibility, the research sought to understand how each of these topics can be leveraged to amplify the other. The findings can inform actionable guidance for companies as they build and grow their DEIA and social responsibility programs.

Our friends at SeaChoice have done a great job of incorporating measurable indicators of human and labor rights risk into their program. Read more in our recent case study.
We're proud to share that our 2023 Seafood Progress methodologies for grocers and brands reflect FishWise's expert and current guidance around socially responsible seafood. Thank you to FishWise for publishing a case study on SeaChoice, linked to below! A quick excerpt: "SeaChoice is pushing brands and grocers to leverage traceability to address human and labor rights in supply chains by including an indicator on worker representation in their methodology...By relying on thoughtful and measurable indicators, they are moving the industry forward into more socially responsible practices." - FishWise's RISE case study https://lnkd.in/gRh4Sa2p

As we embark on 2024, it's a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of the Blue Ports Initiative in 2023. Last year, we successfully organized four distinct capacity-building workshops: an international workshop in Morocco focusing on city-port relationships, a regional workshop in Ecuador on traceability for Latin America, a national workshop in Argentina on blue ports, and an insightful online webinar on national action plans in connection with Glo Litter. Key milestones include the publication of a roadmap for becoming a blue port and our collaborative effort in the UN Global Compact's guidance publication for ports. Our engagement extended to supporting capacity-building processes in Colombia and the blue ports project in São Tomé and Príncipe with the African Development Bank. We also actively participated in the COFI-FT Bergen side event and the KMI International Conference on Fishing Villages in Korea. Our discussions with various organizations, AfDB, SALT, AIVP, IAPH, WB, and member countries have been crucial, focusing on technical and funding support. This progress wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of Spain, including Secretaria de Pesca, Puertos del Estado, Xunta de Galicia, and Puerto de Vigo. Their commitment has been a cornerstone of our success. As we move into 2024, we look forward to continuing our mission with various planned activities, ever grateful for the continuous support that makes our work possible. Here's to another year of impactful collaboration and sustainable growth!

This excellent investigative reporting by Ian Urbina highlights the illegal labor and fishing activities enabled by a lack of transparency about vessel identity and movement. It further underscores the need for companies to not only know their vessels but to proactively monitor risks. https://zurl.co/BSmg #IUUfishing #OutLawOcean #transparency

Celebrating the 6-year run of SALT, the Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability. Congrats to FishWise, USAID, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and Walton Family Foundation. 🎉 It was an honor to launch this project during my time at FishWise, and it's been incredible to see how far-reaching and impactful it became under the leadership of Jenny Barker, Jennifer Kane, Sara G. Lewis and the many, many others that worked on this project. The SALT event recording can be found here: https://lnkd.in/epuQ6x7h

I am honored to have participated in this insightful event organized by Seafood Alliance for Legality and Traceability and FishWise, "Seafood Alliance for Traceability - Taking Stock and Next Steps". I participated in this all-female panel where we discussed the importance of traceability in a global seafood industry, inclusivity and accessibility to all stakeholders, including artisanal fishers and the crucial roles the government must take towards advancing transparency and traceability. Traceability is a necessary tool to ensure illegal fishing is kept out of the markets and to achieve sustainable and responsible management of fish stocks and, therefore, ensure healthy oceans and healthy and prosperous fishing communities. In Oceana we will continue working towards the approval and implementation of traceability regulations.
